Canada's Stephen Gogolev and the rest of the men's figure skating field will need something special to catch Ilia Malinin of the United States.
Gogolev, 21, scored an 87.41 in the men's short program at the Olympic Winter Games on Tuesday and sits in 10th place.
He is well behind Malinin, who is in first place after a breathtaking performance that saw him score 108.16.
The 21-year-old American, who goes by the self-proclaimed nickname the "Quad God," is the two-time reigning men's world champion and has not lost an event since a Grand Prix in November 2023.
Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama is in second after a score of 103.07, and Adam Siao Him Fa of France sits third with a 102.55.
The competition continues on Friday with the men's free program, after which the medals will be handed out.
